Hills & Saunders was one of the leading Victorian photographic firms, specialising in portraits of university students, public-school pupils, military officers and members of the royal family. Robert Hills began offering photography at his Oxford premises in Cornmarket Street in 1856, entering into partnership with John Henry Saunders in 1860. The firm rapidly expanded, establishing studios at Eton in 1864, as well as at Cambridge, Harrow, London, Aldershot, Sandhurst and Rugby.
The firm's success was built on its close connections with prestigious educational institutions. Hills & Saunders photographed Edward, Prince of Wales, during his time at Oxford and received a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1867. Its output included cartes-de-visite, cabinet portraits, school and university group photographs, and architectural views.
The original Hills–Saunders partnership was dissolved in 1889, following which members of both families continued to operate branches under the established name. The Eton and Harrow studios survived particularly long, and the historic business and its archives were acquired by Gillman & Soame in 2019, bringing together two major photographic collections spanning more than a century and a half.
